A roast dinner is one of the nation’s favorite meals, especially one involving roast chicken. If you were to grab one in a restaurant or pub you’d be looking to pay close to £10 minimum, especially if you want one on a Sunday.

But Santiago’s at the bus station gives locals the chance to have a mid-week roast for just £5 a plate, or you could get lasagne for the same price. To see what you get for your money I decided to go there and try this super cheap meal.

Walking into the cafeteria, I went straight to the counter to order my food. They asked if I wanted to add fries to my dish, which seemed like a confusing addition to the traditional dish, so I declined.

It only took them five minutes to bring my food. As the cost of the dish was only £5, I didn’t expect the portion to be huge in size, and I was right, but again you pay £5 for the meal. The dish consisted of a whole chicken thigh, three potatoes, a piece of broccoli, four carrots, and a decent size pot of sauce.

The taste of everything was good to start with and I finished the whole thing. The chicken was delicious and well cooked and the amount you get was quite good, especially considering the price you pay in supermarkets. The carrots were very sweet, almost as if they had been glazed with honey, which was really nice. The same could be said for the potatoes, they had a beautiful flavor but I wouldn’t class them as roast potatoes for lack of crunch.
