A rapist labeled a ‘dangerous sexual predator’ by a judge has died in prison. Robin Crago, from Withington in Manchester, was 49 when he was jailed for life in January 2006.
Crago, formerly of Mauldeth Road West, pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court to the rape of a teenage girl and four other rapes. He received sentences totaling 22 years for 12 other serious sex crimes.
A published report reveals that Crago, who was serving his sentence at Wakefield Prison and was 65 years old, died in hospital while in custody on August 24, 2022. The prison is nicknamed the ‘Monster Mansion’ due to the amount of high-profile prisoners serving time there. .

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman’s report revealed that Crago suffered from diabetes which, along with high blood pressure and obesity, had caused damage to some organs, particularly his kidneys. In 2011, he was diagnosed with stage three chronic kidney disease.
By January 2020, the report reveals, his condition had worsened and he subsequently required dialysis treatment, although he had periods in which he was not compliant with his treatment. During 2021 and 2022 he missed dozens of dialysis sessions, Leeds Live reports.
In a report, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman said: “Mr Crago’s health deteriorated as a result of his intermittent commitment to his dialysis, and in 2022 his mobility was affected and he had several falls. “They said that given her frailty and refusal to go on dialysis, it might be time to consider end-of-life care instead of treatment.
“A member of the healthcare staff discussed his situation with Mr. Crago and that he was at high risk of death without treatment. Mr. Crago said he wasn’t sure he wanted to die and wanted a couple of days to think it over. He was Okay. He went to the hospital and was taken there late that night.”
The report added: “At the hospital, Mr. Crago was initially uncooperative with hospital staff, but on the afternoon of August 16, he agreed to receive treatment. Over the next few days he had three dialysis sessions.
“But on August 22, he had decided to refuse any further treatment despite attempts to persuade him by hospital and prison staff. Therefore, a doctor at the hospital told him that treatment would be changed to end-of-care. life. Mr. Crago died in the hospital on August 24.”
The Ombudsman concluded in the report: “The clinical reviewer concluded that the clinical care Mr Crago received at Wakefield was equivalent to what he might have expected to receive in the community. However, he said that better and more frequent formal assessments capacity would have been appropriate given Mr. Crago’s repeated refusals to accept treatment.”
The sentencing judge told Crago as he was imprisoned: “This is one of the most serious cases of sexual crimes that has ever come before this court.
