For those tempted to dismiss Erling Haaland’s historically good start as a Premier League striker, it’s safe to say his temptation is now officially unhealthy.
Haaland’s 27th goal of the season, scored at Bournemouth on Saturday, makes him Manchester City’s record holder for Premier League goals in a single season.
“But ProSoccerTalk, aren’t there more than a dozen match weeks left?”
Why, yes, yes there is!

There is something somewhat boring about knowing the identity of the winner of the Golden Boot 2022, the only curiosity is the final number of his final tally, we understand that, but most of what Haaland is doing this season is simply wonderful and to be admired without much fear.
Premier League-leading Haaland’s 27 goals puts him 10 goals behind the next closest opponent: Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
The Norwegian star racked up 20 goals in a single Premier League season faster than any other player in history… over seven games (Sunderland’s Kevin Phillips did it in 21). He is now five goals away from equaling Kevin Phillips’ record for most goals in a debut Premier League season.
And the later this season you go with him projected so far above the current record, the fewer throws accompany setting the pace (especially considering Haaland wasn’t beaten by the World Cup, since Norway weren’t in the tournament). . And while Haaland is currently surpassing his expected goal total, it’s clear that projecting him for the Premier League record is quite realistic.

What records can Haaland break?
Haaland is likely to miss 50 goals given the congested calendar ahead for Man City, but the Premier League record is very much under attack and that number is not entirely absurd. He has played in 23 of Man City’s 24 games, scoring 26 goals.
Mohamed Salah holds the season record of 38 games with his 32 goals scored for Liverpool during the 2017-18 season, while Newcastle’s Andy Cole and Blackburn’s Alan Shearer scored 34 during 42-game seasons in the last decade of the 20th century.
Haaland could also topple the record for goal participation (goals plus assists) in a single season, even breaking the record of 42 games. Alan Shearer contributed 47 of 42, while Thierry Henry holds the record of 38 games with 44.
Other records Haaland could legitimately tie or topple:
30 goals in a first season in the Premier League (Kevin Phillips, Sunderland, 1999-2000)
Goals in 24 different Premier League matches (Salah, Liverpool, 2017-18)
Most goals in a Premier League game (Five tied with five)
11 consecutive Premier League games with a goal (Jamie Vardy, Leicester, 2014-15)
