League One leaders Sheffield Wednesday set a new English Football League club record as they went 20 games unbeaten with a win at Charlton Athletic.
The Owls had already hit the post through Barry Bannan before taking a ninth-minute lead through Liam Palmer.
Palmer had time and space from 10 yards out to control Jaden Brown’s pass before rolling past Charlton keeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer.
Maynard-Brewer saved Palmer and Dominic Iorfa in the first half, and Addicks defender Lucas Ness produced a perfectly timed tackle to deny Josh Windass.
But on Wednesday they were not so sure after the restart. Charlton striker Miles Leaburn drilled a cross attempt in front of goal, while goalkeeper Cameron Dawson deflected Corey Blackett-Taylor’s low shot around his right post.
Iorfa made a vital tackle on Leaburn after Dawson was only able to stop Addicks substitute Chuks Aneke’s effort from 20 yards out.
They kept their 19th league clean sheet on Wednesday and are now three points clear of second-placed Plymouth, who lost 5-2 at Peterborough.
