      Sheffield house fire that left 6-year-old girl in hospital ‘started deliberately’

      South Yorkshire Police have confirmed they believe a house fire which left four people in hospital was a deliberate and “targeted” attack.

      There was a large emergency services response to an incident on Wordsworth Avenue in Sheffield on Tuesday night (March 21). Officers were called to the scene of a house fire just before 9 p.m.

      Four people who were in the house at the time of the fire were taken to hospital, a 47-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man remain there and are said to be in serious condition. A six-year-old girl also remains in hospital with what are being described as “minor injuries”.

      Multiple fire trucks and police cars were called to the scene and a crime scene investigation was launched once the flames were out. CCTV footage of the fire is said to show some kind of explosion at the family home.

      As the investigation into the fire continues, officers have confirmed that they believe it was started deliberately. They said investigations are ongoing and have encouraged anyone with information that could help their investigation to get in touch.

      Detective Inspector Rich Armstrong said: “I know this incident may have caused some concern in the community, and I want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to find whoever is responsible. We suspect this was a targeted attack and urge anyone who has seen anything to contact us.
